I found the new recipe here
It is super easy and cheap!
(If you use coupons for the Purex Crystals and Oxy Clean, it’s even cheaper!)
Here’s what you need if you feel so led to make it.
1 Container – Oxy Clean (3lb)
1 Box – Borax (4lb 12 oz)
1 Box – Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda (3lb 7oz)
4 Bars – Fels Naptha Laundry Bar Soap
1 Bottle – Purex Crystals Fabric Softener (55oz)
1 Large Container to Mix and Store it in
Cheese grater
Kitchen Trash Bag (optional)
You need to grate the soap.
(It kinda looks like cheese…. Hehehe)
I used a big tub with a lid and lined it with a trash bag.
Just start dumping everything into the tub
.
I used the scoop from the Oxy Clean container to mix everything.
Once you are done grating and mixing, start using!
Use 1-2 tablespoons per load!
That’s right. Not that much.
It does feel like you are going to need more,
but we are so used to using detergent full of water and fillers.
This is obviously going to last a long time!
Saving money.
Makes me inspired to do some laundry…..

I also used to make my own detergent but like you found it just didn’t do the job. When we got to the last of the homemade stuff, our clothes had a yellow tinge to them and just didn’t look clean. So I stopped making it and went back to store bought. I see you posted this a year ago. How do you like the detergent? Does it still work as well? I’m hesitant to try again! I’d love to hear from you.
Thank you!

Hi Rebecca!
I found that this recipe really worked! I use 1/4 c. Vinegar in place of a softener as well. My clothes consistently come out clean and smelling fresh. I do still have to pre-treat the bad stains on my boys clothes. But I am often surprised by what my homemade soap gets out on its own! I hope you try again! You could always add an extra tablespoon of oxy-clean to every load to help a little with any yellow look you feel you might be getting.
Good luck!

From what I have read from others about homemade laundry soap the yellowing might actually come from the fels-naptha soap. The use of zote was recommended instead, and I have to say I like the smell of it better. I just made up mine, minus the fabric softener crystals as I use vinegar and still use the dryer sheets for scent and static cling prevention. Fingers crossed!

I have just heard of Zote. Everything I have heard about is positive. I haven’t noticed any yellowing from the fels-naptha as of yet. Good luck!

Does this work with HE washers?
Keikilani Jackson says
Sarah, I do not have an HE washer. I have heard that this recipe works with HE washers because it is low suds. I would double check with your manufacture to be sure. Good luck!
