For the past few weeks our conversations at the breakfast table with my five year old have been all about him starting a business. His little mind is already in entrepreneur mode. He doesn’t even know how to say that word, but he is working on the details of how and where and when he will open his business. His imagination is HUGE!
My husband and I are both self-employed. We are very open with our kids about what we do. We talk “business” around them. We include them in the daily activities of what a business looks like. It is no surprise to us that our five year old’s mind is thinking about the future. We love to stir up the imagination of our kids! (#StirImagination)
We died laughing when he announced that his business was going to be a restaurant! This kid. He LOVES to eat! This is the kid who 10 minutes after dinner is done, BEFORE the dishes are even washed and put away… tells me…
“I’m hungry, Mom!”
Jimmy is the one who is interested in helping me in the kitchen. He wants to know how I cook things he likes. What did I put in it? Why did I cook it that way? Where did that ingredient come from? Questions. Questions. Questions!
I love it! And I want to do everything I can to encourage it. I don’t know if he will one day have the most insanely, unique and fabulous restaurant. But I do want him to imagine exactly what it could be right now. I want him to dream big. And I want him to experience the thrill of planning and dreaming about what he could do.
I asked Jimmy to draw up some business plans and to help me in the kitchen. His plans were amazing! He sketched out a playground in the back of the restaurant outside for the kids. He had a drawing of the kitchen where he would cook. The decoration on the walls would be his families faces. He cut out and glued all the pieces of his plans together. It was actually quite impressive!
When I asked him about his menu, he said “Everything that tastes good!” And his prices were, “You guys will eat free. Just come in, and say that you know me. And you don’t have to pay.”
(I like this kid! HA!)
I asked Jimmy to help me come up with some new kid friendly breakfast ideas for our family. And he immediately came up with ICE CREAM Sundaes!
Of course, I thought, “Ummmmm… No. Too much sugar!” at first. But then an idea came to me and we set to work making a Breakfast Ice Cream with delicious toppings that would be healthy, low sugar, and a perfect start to the day.
We made three types of ice cream. Vanilla Banana, Chocolate Banana, and Strawberry Banana. Frozen bananas, greek yogurt, honey, and milk were the base of all of our ice creams. We just added one more ingredient to make each different flavor. Think smoothie meets ice cream! So quick and so easy!
Vanilla Banana:
- 1 cup frozen bananas
- 2 tbsp greek yogurt, plain
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 tbsp milk
Chocolate Banana:
- 1 cup frozen bananas
- 2 tbsp greek yogurt, plain
- 1 tbsp honey
- 3 tbsp NESTLÉ® Nesquik® Chocolate Powder (Our families favorite!)
- 2 tbsp milk
Strawberry Banana:
- 1 cup frozen bananas
- 2 tbsp greek yogurt, plain
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1/2 cup chopped strawberries
- 2 tbsp milk
Toppings:
- granola
- mini chocolate chips
- blueberries
- strawberries
- bananas
- whipped cream
- cereal
- crushed graham crackers
Directions:
Blend each ice cream individually in a blender or food processor until smooth. Pour into freezer safe containers and freeze for at least 3 hours. When ready to assemble sundaes, pull out ice cream and allow to soften for 5-8 minutes on the counter. Scoop into bowl and top with desired toppings. Serve with a nice tall glass of NESTLÉ® Nesquik® Chocolate Milk!!!
The Breakfast Ice Cream Sundaes are a hit with the whole family! (Including me!) I am always happy when my kids start out the day with a great breakfast and of course, their Nestlé Nesquik® Chocolate Milk. Seven essential vitamins and minerals and Iron in their glasses of milk is an easy way to keep them happy! Not to mention 45% less sugar than the leading syrup brands. (We seriously can’t live without our chocolate milk!)
I love stirring up imagination in my kids. And while I can’t give Jimmy his restaurant right now, I CAN keep encouraging him to dream big. Kids can be entrepreneurs! I will get him in the kitchen a lot more. We will keep starting the day with a great breakfast so his little imagination can keep growing and finding new things to dream about!
Happy Imaginations!

I had to laugh because my 4 yo son just asked for ice cream for breakfast this morning! My oldest (17) just bought a mower yesterday to start his own yard care business. I am nervous because he struggles with organizational skills, but he already has plans to hire his sister as his secretary/accountant if he gets a lot of business. haha
